The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga, CBS, OGW, today joined key actors in the criminal justice sector and representatives from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for a meeting aimed at strengthening efforts to combat transnational organized crime.
The meeting brought together criminal justice agencies including Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Asset Recovery Agency, Kenya Revenue Authority and Financial Reporting Centre to deliberate on emerging threats posed by organized criminal networks and explore strategies for enhancing cooperation, information sharing and coordinated responses to crimes that transcend national borders.
Speaking during the meeting, the DPP underscored the need for stronger collaboration among law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, noting that the complex and evolving nature of transnational organized crime cannot be effectively addressed by a single institution acting alone.
“Tackling transnational organized crime requires joint efforts, strong partnerships and coordinated action among all actors in the criminal justice system,” the DPP said.
Mr. Ingonga emphasized that criminal networks continue to exploit technological advancements, porous borders and differences in legal and enforcement frameworks to facilitate their activities, making inter-agency and international cooperation critical in disrupting their operations.
He called for enhanced sharing of intelligence and expertise, effective coordination of investigations and prosecutions, and strengthened mechanisms for cross-border cooperation to ensure that perpetrators do not evade justice by operating across jurisdictions.
The DPP further reaffirmed the commitment of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to working closely with law enforcement agencies and international partners to strengthen the criminal justice response to transnational organized crime.
He noted that sustained partnerships such as those involving the FBI provide an important platform for building institutional capacity, sharing expertise and developing effective approaches to investigating and prosecuting complex crimes.
The DPP added that his office continues to strengthen partnerships with national, regional and international criminal justice actors in line with its mandate to ensure effective, independent and fair prosecution of criminal cases.
