Workshop on Nuclear Security in Kenya Concludes with Call for Stronger Legal Frameworks and Collaboration

In a significant step towards reinforcing Kenya’s nuclear security, a high-level workshop on nuclear security, attended by key stakeholders and legal experts, concluded today with a renewed commitment to strengthening the nation’s nuclear security framework.

The workshop, organized with support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), focused on the role of good governance, collaboration, and robust legal frameworks in ensuring nuclear security.

The event brought together Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Office of the Attorney General, officers from the ministry of Foreign Affairs, and nuclear security experts from the IAEA to address emerging nuclear threats, explore Kenya’s preparedness, and discuss the legal frameworks necessary for safeguarding nuclear materials and infrastructure.

The discussions underscored the importance of nuclear security not only as a technological concern but as a matter of governance and law enforcement, essential for protecting Kenya and the global community from potential nuclear risks.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Michael Sang, the Ag. Deputy Director of public prosecutions in charge of county affairs and regulatory prosecution emphasized the critical role of legal enforcement and international collaboration in achieving lasting nuclear security. He noted that nuclear security is not just about technologies but about good governance, collaboration, and the rule of law.

He encouraged participants to ensure they embrace and implement the insights gained during the workshop into actionable improvements within Kenya’s legal systems, underscoring the importance of accountability, ongoing development, and collaboration with international partners.

He further acknowledged IAEA for its guidance and expertise throughout the workshop, and NuPEA for its commitment to Kenya’s nuclear security goals and its ongoing efforts to ensure the secure and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
